Education
I have a Bachelor of Science from the University of South Carolina in Environmental and Physical Geography. In December 2004, I graduated from the University of South Carolina with GTU (Gamma Theta Upsilon) honors and finished my last three semesters on the Deans List. I left USC serving as Vice President of a collegiate club and a member of a fraternity.
A lot of people ask me why a Geographer is doing web design... the answer is a story.
When I first started college in the fall of 1999, I, like my father before me, was set on becomming an Engineer. But after three and a half years of Engineering (both Computer and Civil) I decided Engineering wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. Instead I decided to turn to the natural sciences, something I'd always been very interested in and passionate about. My inate curiosity about the earth we live on lead me to do very well in my new found field of study, and I was even selected as an undergraduate to work on grant funded projects with my mentor at the time, a prominant faculty member with the University. It was an honor, and for a long time I had planned to continue my education at the University and earn my masters degree. I then had considered going to Florida or LSU to complete my doctorate degree. The later two degrees never came to pass due to me choosing work and real life over the former choice. Sometimes I do miss the University environment, but I also enjoy my profession. Which begs the question again, how did a Geography get into web design?
My web design days start back in the mid-90's in High School when I received my first computer from my parents as a Christmas gift. I immediately became fascinated with the world wide web. In 1997, I began to learn about HTML and tinker with small scale web design. Later in 1999, a girl I dated really introduced me to advanced HTML and web coding, and the rest, as they say, is history. I took my first job dabbling in web design part time in 2001, increasing my skill set dramatically during that time, and then took my first full time web developer position at SCETV in 2007. Three years later, out of a job due to budget cuts, I decided to begin my search in the private sector. I was very fortunate, given the economy, and found my new home at DuBose Web Group in Columbia, SC where I now serve as the Director of Web Development. My current job is incredibly rewarding, allowing me the opportunity to work on a vast array of projects from complex eCommerce projects to simple news blogs. I hope to make DuBose Web Group my home for a long time into the future.
I also continue to run my own personal websites, which you can read more about in my Portfolio.
